paradox of the ritual矛盾的祭祀

Documentary / Photograph
35mm film

After 8 years away, I returned to my hometown due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.

I started to photograph three types of rituals distinguished by their frequency. Rituals that persist in daily life; regular ritual once or twice a year; once-in-a-lifetime ritual. The three rituals cover most of the ritual scenes in general.

On a personal level, people from pan-Asian areas have these similar feelings that they miss those who have passed away who are their ancestors, while at the same time, they fear their theophany will bring disaster. They pray to the objects of worship (gods or ancestors) for good luck or blessings and generally do not make devotional offerings to them (forgetfulness and disinterest).

It is these paradoxical emotions that interest me and drive me to keep looking into it.
